Youth Activation - Project UNIFY

Project UNIFY is a U.S. national project, partially funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Its goal is to activate young people around the country in an effort to develop school communities where all young people are agents of change - fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities by utilizing the programs and initiatives of Special Olympics.

There are many programs in Project UNIFY for schools to get involved and youth to develop leadership skills (see below).  Contact the Special Olympics Arizona Training & Unified Sports® Manager at 602-230-9135 or UnifiedSports@SpecialOlympicsArizona.org to discuss how you and your school can get involved with Project UNIFY!   Please visit the SOAZ Forms Area to view the documents and forms associated with Project UNIFY.

Unified Sports® Programs & Clubs

Schools across Arizona are starting Unified Sports® Programs and Clubs because of the inclusive and culture-changing opportunities it creates for everyone involved.  For further information visit the Unified Sports® page, which includes videos and training materials on starting a school-based Unified Sports® Program.

Spread the Word to End the Word

Spread the Word to End the Word is a campaign to raise awareness of the hurtful effects of the word "retard(ed)" and encourage people to pledge to stop using it.  The national awareness day is March 31.  Many schools in Arizona have lead "Spread the Word to End the Word" Campaigns right on their campus!  Visit www.r-word.org to take the pledge today.  Campaign resources are available on the r-word website and a downloadable best practices documents can be found in the forms section of this website.

Unified Sports® Messenger Program

Athletes and partners are not just a team on the field!  In this program, they are paired together and receive leadership training to become public advocates for Unified Sports® and Special Olympics Arizona.  After the training, the pairs speak at schools, meet with sponsors and represent Unified Sports® at other Special Olympics events.
